Kia ora! I’m Shirley, your host, and I live with my husband in the home attached to View With A Room NZ on New Zealand’s West Coast. We love this stunning part of the country and enjoy helping guests discover its beaches, dramatic coastline, native wildlife, hidden gems and the best places to explore between Greymouth and Punakaiki along the Great Coast Road.

The views you see throughout this website are the views you'll experience during your stay. Every photo was taken by my husband or me from View With A Room NZ or while exploring Motukiekie Beach.

Your stay is designed for complete privacy, with plenty of space to enjoy the surroundings, and we are always available if you need us. Explore Motukiekie Beach right from your doorstep, a favourite with nature and landscape photographers. Discover dramatic sea stacks, colourful starfish and rock pools at low tide, or drive just 20 minutes to Punakaiki's famous Pancake Rocks.

Hunt for pounamu (greenstone) on the beach right outside your door, browse the authentic Barrytown and Fox River markets in summer, and explore the region's rich gold rush history in nearby towns and heritage sites.

A beautiful sunset tonight. And if it's like the last few nights, we'll get the Milky Way in its full glory later too. Love it here.

And this is why we’re called View With A Room NZ.

This picture captures some of the ways we try to be sustainable and environmentally responsible here @viewwitharoomnz. Power from the sun. Water from the clouds. Food we grow ourselves. Biodegradable waste fed back to the earth. Not in the picture are the over a thousand mostly native trees we’ve planted to reforest the front of the property, the area we’re preparing for an orchard behind the house and the happy free range chickens who lay delicious eggs in the warmer months and live rent-free for the rest of the year. 😆

Four years ago today, the first walls went up here. We designed this property to have a connected but completely separate guest wing for friends, family and other guests to enjoy this beautiful place too. Privacy, comfort and maximising the view were clear goals from the start. This is the bathroom window wall for @viewwitharoomnz. The workers and flat panels are all in the guest suite in this photo. You can see how thick the panels are. The internal walls are just as thick and our own living space is separated from the guest space by the bathroom and a laundry in between. You enjoy your space here while we enjoy ours without disturbance either way. 😁

Even on a wild night, the view here can be magical!

This is a Hector's dolphin, one of the smallest and most endangered dolphins in the world. We are lucky to share our beach with them. Yesterday, when making over the room between guests, I had to stop for about half an hour to enjoy watching a large pod surfing the breakers right opposite us. Too far to photograph effectively, but an absolute joy-bringer to watch. Of course, we don't see these beautiful creatures every day, but a number of guests this year already have said they've watched them from the accommodation.
